It is time to explore the 7 Wonders of Angola.
1. Kalandula Falls - #Malanje
Located on the Lucala River in Malanje province, about 360–400 km east of Luanda.
The Lucala River, which gave life to this magnificent Angolan wonder, originates in the highlands of Uíge province in northern Angola. Further south, the river flows into the Cuanza River.
During the Portuguese colonial era, the falls were known as the *Quedas do Duque de Bragança* (Duke of Braganza Falls), but they later reclaimed their traditional name.
The best time to visit is generally during or just after the rainy season (approximately March to May), when river levels are highest and the waterfall has the greatest flow and power.
During the dry season, the water flow decreases, making it easier to explore certain viewpoints near the base.
Kalandula Falls holds deep indigenous history and spiritual significance, as well as cultural identity.
The local community near the falls is the Mbundu people (also known as Ambundu). They speak the Kimbundu language.
It is worth noting that Kimbundu is one of the most widely spoken local languages in Angola, although the younger generation needs to take steps to preserve it, as many speak only Portuguese. But that is a topic for another day.
Kalandula Falls is important to the community and serves as a source of pride for its inhabitants.
In the past, the falls played a fundamental role, acting as a sort of GPS for the Ambundu as they traveled from place to place.
The river was—and remains—a source of drinking water and aquatic food, as well as a sacred site where various offerings were made to God, according to need.
